COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A newborn has been surrendered to a Columbia hospital under the Safe Haven Act.
The South Carolina Department of Social Services announced on Friday that a baby had been surrendered to Prisma Health Richland Hospital on Wednesday. Authorities said the boy was born on April 7. The child has since been placed with a licensed foster home. A permanency planning and termination of parental rights hearing will be held on July 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the Richland County Family Court at 1701 Main Street.
The 10-pound, 8.7-ounce baby was surrendered under South Carolina's Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act, also known as Daniel's Law. He is the second surrendered infant in South Carolina in 2025. The law provides a legal way to surrender an infant up to 60 days after birth.
The law, signed in 2001, was inspired by an infant boy who survived after being buried in an Allendale County landfill not long after being born. He received the name Daniel from nurses as he recovered in the hospital, and the law that now shares his name is an effort to prevent similar danger to newborn abandoned children.
